Comenius Teaching Fellow-grant for Maaike Muntinga for teaching innovation projects

March 6th, Maaike Muntinga (teacher/researcher at the VUmc department of Metamedica) received, handed out by minister Bussemaker, the Comenius Teaching Fellow-grant for teaching innovation projects. This prestigious Teaching Fellowship a 50.000 euros, allows teachers to start innovation projects at their institutes. This year theme is: promote equal opportunities for student in higher education.

The project of Muntinga focusses on the diversity among medical students. The standard image of a doctor in hospitals is ‘white’ and ‘male’. Furthermore the ‘professional attitude’ of a doctor is often ‘neutral, ‘’decontextualized’ and  ‘depersonalized’. Medical interns, physicians in training and medical specialists will discuss cultural diversity, inclusion and intercultural communication. Based on these discussion a short film will be created by an artist, Lina Issa (ArtPartner). This film will be used to promote the dialogue about diversity and is part of the ‘Interculturalisation and Diversty’ learning pathway, which implements diversity issues related to health and health care into the curriculum of VU Medical Center School of Medical Sciences (VUmc SMS).
