Leontien van Wely

Leontien van Wely is postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam (focus: physical activity stimulation in pediatric rehabilitation; selfmanagement).

Thereby, she is working as coordinator, researcher and lecturer at Physiotherapy education at Hogeschool Leiden (focus: Health and Behaviour, and Selfmanagement in chronic care). 



Leontien studied “Physiotherapy” at the Hogeschool Leiden (2001-2005) and “Human movement sciences” at the VU University Amsterdam (2005-2007). During the latter study Leontien was working as a physiotherapist in a physiotherapy practice (2005-2008), during which lifestyle promotion and stimulating physical activity had her special attention.

Between 2008 and 2013 Leontien was PhD-student at the department of rehabilitation medicine of the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam (VUmc) where she was involved in the design and execution of the LEARN 2 MOVE 7-12 physical activity stimulation program. This multicenter RCT was aimed at evaluating the effects of a physical stimulation program in school-aged children with cerebral palsy. She was awarded a personal travel grant by the EMGO+ research institute to visit and collaborate with the Seattle Children’s Research Institute in the United States. There, she studied the differences in physical activity between Dutch and American children with cerebral palsy.
