Sandra  Martins Pereira

Sandra Pereira is a EURO-IMPACT Marie Curie Experienced Researcher at the VU Medical Center and EMGO+ Institute of Health and Care Research, in Amsterdam. She is currently working on the development of a book on palliative care for older people.

Previously, Sandra Pereira worked as a Professor at the University of The Azores (2003-2013), where she coordinated the Post-Graduation Course in Palliative Care. She also worked for several years as a nurse in a hospital (1996-2003) in Porto, Portugal.

Sandra Pereira obtained her PhD (2011), Summa cum laude, from the Catholic University of Portugal with the thesis entitled “Burnout in palliative care. A bioethical perspective”, in which she developed a bioethical view upon burnout syndrome in physicians and nurses working in specialized palliative care teams in Portugal. She obtained her MSc (2007) in Bioethics from the same University, with a dissertation about education on palliative care in the nursing graduation curricula in Portugal. Since 2007, Sandra is an integrated member of the Office for Research in Bioethics at the Institute of Bioethics, Catholic University of Portugal.

She is a registered nurse in Portugal, country where she obtained her Diploma (1996) and BSc (2002) in Nursing from the Porto Nursing College, and in Educational Sciences (2003) from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Porto.

Her main research interests are on ethical issues, ethical deliberation and decision making in palliative care, quality of life, palliative nursing, professionals’ burnout, and palliative care for older people.
