Hieke  Barends

Hieke Barends works as a PhD student on the project “the course of medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) and underlying mechanisms, a long term follow-up study” (PROSPECTS-2 study). She combines her research project with the GP vocational training (AIOTHO-traject: arts in opleiding tot huisarts en onderzoeker).

Hieke completed her master in Medicine at the University of Amsterdam (2011), and studied Medical Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Amsterdam and McGill University (Montréal). After her graduation she was trained as an Emergency Physician (SEH-arts KNMG) at the OLVG hospital, Amsterdam (2015). In her research and work as a medical doctor, she is interested in the patients’ experience of illness and the interaction between mind and body.
