Amber van der heijden followed a two year master 'Public Health Research'. In this master she performed a research project on nutrition and risk of obesity at the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.

In 2006, she started her PhD project entitled: “Cost-effectiveness of care for patients with type 2 diabetes, an evaluation of an innovative shared diabetes care model”
In this project she evaluates the cost-effectiveness of structured diabetes care and she develops the MICADO model, a model to estimate the long term cost-effectiveness of interventions in diabetes patients.
